Bed bugs get their name from their habit of hiding near beds, which allows them to feed on human guests while they sleep. Adult bugs are about ¼ inch long. They have reddish-brown mahogany bodies that are flat and oval when not fed, swell and lengthen after a meal of blood.
Habitat: Bedbugs are excellent hitchhikers. They will hide in luggage, wallets, briefcases, laptops and other personal belongings in an effort to find a supply of food for humans. They are elusive creatures. Bed bugs are often found near the bedding and mattresses, but they also hide behind the baseboards, on the electrical switch plates and picture frames, behind the wallpaper and almost anywhere in a house, car, bus, hotel, university residence, etc.
Bite mark: bed bugs are known to bite humans, especially on the legs, arms and other exposed body parts while asleep. While some people may develop red welts that itch, others will not show any signs.
Threats: Bed bugs do not transmit diseases, but people can develop an allergic reaction to bed bug saliva, which acts as a numbing agent.
